Junior Hockey Team “Canada” or Team “Western Canada”
Posted by GSH-Editor on Tuesday, December 07, 2004
Writen and Contributed by: Whitey

On Monday December 6th, Hockey Canada announced the 32 names that will be invited to the final selection camp of Team Canada for the 2005 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championships. Of the 32 players invited to the camp, which opens Dec. 12 in Winnipeg, an amazing 21 are from the Western Hockey League. That includes 4 of 4 goaltenders invited, seven of 10 defensemen and 10 of 18 forwards...

This time of the year is suppose to bring us all closer together as we patiently await Christmas day, not for the big jolly guy with the beard, but for the drop of the first puck of the WJHC. But things are different this year, it’s the complete opposite. So far this roster announcement is separating Canada and its hockey supporters more than anything.

To most Canadians, it doesn’t matter where you’re from or what league you play in. If you’re good enough to be at camp and make the team then that’s all they ask but now, less than 24 hours after the camp roster was announced, TSN’s ‘Your Call’ message boards have received 200+ posts about the roster just not for the reasons you might think. Instead of congratulating those who made the list or wishing the team luck at the tournament, I found everyone arguing about why there was so little representation from the OHL and QMJHL compared to the WHL.

As expected, there will always be someone who will disagree about some of the selections but one gentleman from our bi-lingual brother Quebec, went as far as to say that “This can only mean one thing: if you are born in Quebec, you will be victim of discrimination no matter if you have skill, talent or heart”. Hockey Canada is there to put the best team possible on the ice in order to capture our country a gold medal not to discriminate against you because of where you live....more

This day leaves many Canadians thinking (and arguing) about and defending their local Junior league, because of course, it must be the best. I guess some people don’t understand why the selection committee chose who they did but if you look at the statistics of each player, individually, they all deserve to be there. They wouldn’t be on the list if they didn’t, right? Yes, there are some players that probably could have been there just as much as a guy on the list but that’s the beauty of it… that is why Canada is one of the greatest hockey nations in the world, because we have that depth, we have the depth to leave off NHL players like Nathan Horton because no one is bigger than the country and the team. We may not all speak the same language or play the same style of hockey but it’s always going to be Team Canada, all the way from Newfoundland to B.C and everywhere in between.

great article...
being from the east cost, i would have liked to see more players from home on the team..but thats the way the cookie crumbles!
ask the people who disagree if they want to win or if they want to see a couple players from the »Q« on the team...that should shut them up!
GO CANADA GO!

Good article bud. In one of the articles I wrote for July when the site was launching (http://www.gongshowhockey.com/main.php?name=News&file=article&sid=26) I was following the same story and I'd just like to point out (being from the west, and all) that only 2 guys from the original 23 of 44 that were selected got cut between the summer and winter camps...that's sick eh

the dub beat russia like 7-1 was, the O only won by a goal, and the Q lost. WHL is defending the mem as well. i know usa olympic basketball tinkers with the idea of sending the nba champs to the olympics, what is kelowna went? how are they this year? also what if the whole london team (all canadians) went, thatd be kinda filfthy

kelowna isnt bad, they just have had brutal goaltending ever since guard left

goaltending is basically the same, guard wasn't anything special, they're just lacking in the defense department

geographically the NWT still falls between those two, thats what i meant... i didnt meant to leave them out or anything because i'm a huge fan of Tootoo.

I don't know if you got a chance to vote for the all time best team canada on tsn.ca but you can pick up to 13 forwards and they left Tootoo off of the list... in my mind he was one of the best, for the fans to watch at least.

Maybe im an american and don't understand this concept, but what is the big deal with kids from out west getting most of the roster spots. Is it a big deal in canada about west and eastern kids or something?

Someone fill me in, i'm a confused amerk,

There has always been a little competition throughout the 3 Major Junior Leagues in Canada, the OHL, WHL and QMJHL. One is always trying to get the upper hand on the others somehow so it be can Canada's premier league.

Hockey Canada felt that they needed to take the best 32 players they could find, it just happened to be that 21 of them are from the WHL.. and because of the little rivalries between the leagues, this naturally left a bitter taste in most Ontario and Eastern Canadian hockey fans.
