Hockey Stories Hockey: Just a Sport?
Posted by GSH-Editor on Monday, July 26, 2004
Over the years, it becomes more and more apparent that the most important aspects of the game of hockey have nothing to do with slapping a puck around the ice.

Most of you will remember that first time you stepped on the ice, and I think we can all agree that it probably resulted with you sliding around on your ass a lot more then you were flying down the ice –but you loved it. Your father would stay up late at night so he could water the rink in the back yard because that’s when it was coldest; he did that all for you and perhaps a little for himself. Fathers and sons have long shared a sacred bond between them through the game of hockey. Be it the early morning practices, time on the outdoor rink, tournaments on the road, or the long talks on a cold snowy highway back home, you enjoyed it all. As you grew older, hockey became more serious. At fifteen you started to hear talk about playing Junior, and your dream of playing in the NHL one day was still alive. Some dreams come true, but some led the way to spawn bigger and better dreams for years to come. Remember, some of God’s greatest gifts are unanswered prayers. The dreams that don’t come true lead the way for bigger and better things to happen. I truly believe that the experience you will get out of Junior and College hockey is no different then the experience of a professional hockey player. This is because, the experience relies less on happenings on the ice and more so on what happens off the ice. You get a chance to travel all over the US and Canada, perhaps live in different cultures, become part of a new family with your billets, and ultimately meet some great Playing hockey is a life lesson in itself. It teaches you camaraderie, friendship, emotion, pressure, fair play, toughness, and ultimately molds you into the person you become later on in life. That person is a man proud of what he’s done on the ice, but ultimately a man that is grateful for the path that hockey has sent them upon. So, as I said in my opening sentence if someone laughs at your dreams on playing hockey for a living, remember that whatever happens in the end, you’ve already won. You have great friends, good memories, and a lifetime of lessons learned. How you use those lessons is up to you. So is hockey just a sport? Hockey is your life…..

Yes it is true that most hockey players know that it might take them to college other than that it is just a game to people who don't understand. hockey has always been more than just a game to hockey players... when your on the ice nothing matters its just you and the boys who cares if you got a ticket or you life sucks cuz you work the 9-5er it just doesn't matter once you are on the ice obviously you are someone who plays hockey but not a hockey player

Hockey is life, i just recently stoped playing and wow this "real life" shit is sucks. No one understands the mind set of hockey players or real pepole are not like us at all. Its like one minute you are running the show and the next you become an outsider, even tho you still have pepole just attached to you just cause you played for some team somewhere, its just not the same not playing competivley. HOCKEY IS LIFE!

All hockey players know hockey is life and everything else takes a back seat, but people that play other sports just don't get it. They think you say hockey is life because it consumes the majority of your time. But thats not it, hockeys life because of the time you spend with the boys, the passion you have for the game, and the things you sacrifice for your teamates and for the love of the game. And those who don't play hockey will never know what it feels like.

Hockey is the premier thing in my life, work, school, the girlfriend, all take a back seat to hockey. Hockey occupies my thoughts during the boring day at work, or sitting through a shitty lecture, or listening to the gf bitch about some nut at her work. When it's time to get on the ice, I get like a hungry dog at dinner time. I can't get on the ice fast enough. When I do, the feeling is second only to sex. There is nothing more important in life than hockey and all the things that come with it. Anyone who says hockey is just a sport should be taken out behind a barn and shot. They deserve to be put out of their misery.

So true is exactly right. Especially in little towns, and waht i mean by that is from the first time you straped up the wheels you always had a place to go and play shinny when u were bored or wahtever. Hockey teached u everything about life and alot more kids should play it. Hockey is life and ill play hockey till my life is done
