 | Friday night was a good one for Saskatchewan hockey legend Gordie Howe in his hometown of Saskatoon, where he was honored before the Blades' played the Prince Albert Raiders with his own street.. While street sign theft is always a problem after big events like this even when it's a massive sign like the one over Wayne Gretzky Drive back home in Edmonton, the city of Saskatoon did it's part to make sure this doesn't happen to their boy by naming the street in front of the city's largest hockey rink "Mr. Hockey |
Gordie Howe Lane" in the hopes that no one around will be strong enough to carry that much lettered signage.
One of the true champions of Old Time Hockey, Gordie Howe is about as legendary as they come in the sport. The phrase "a Gordie Howe Hat Trick" meaning various things including two goals and a fight basically sums up the defining nature of Howe's style of play that shaped an entire nations view on how a Canadian kid should play.
Howe's career lasted 32 years over six decades, which included 4 Stanley Cups as a Detroit Red Wing (his minor team was the Saskatoon Red Wings), 29 all-star appearances, 6 Hart trophies and 6 Art Ross trophies, and a top five spot on the scoring list for 20 consecutive years.
Howe got to play on a line in Hartford for the Whalers with both of his boys as well before retiring from the NHL, and played his last game in 1997-98 when he geared up for a game with the now-defunct IHL's Detroit Vipers at the age of 70.
"I like the cute way they announced it, that I've been running over people for a long time, now people get a chance to run over me."
