Hockey Stories Before the Politics
Posted by toner on Wednesday, March 30, 2005

During my trip home for Easter (yes, my team is already knocked out of the playoffs :() I found some old hockey videos, not just "Rockem’ Sockem’ One" (a beauty if there ever was one), but also some old home videos from tyke and novice games that really brought me back. Coming from a year in junior where the focus was anywhere but on the ice, where politics and money brought a team that was ranked twelfth nationally to cellar, the video reminded me how beautifully simple things were back then. Everything was for the pure love of playing hockey....

Back in the day you’d run around skating your ass off for an hour, get off the ice with just as much energy as you came on with, that big smile on your face, and not a scratch on you to boot! Of course the protection came from that sweet mixture of garage sale and hand-me-down gear, none of which had as much plastic as the huge pads today. The days where the secret weapon wasn’t some new $350 stick made of space-age materials, it was the flick shot that could beat that damn goalie who figured out that he could just lay across the ice and have a better save percentage than Luongo.

Just sit and remember the first few tourneys where you got to stay in a hotel, playing mini-sticks in the hallways with your friends until the hotel staff booted you for making too much noise. Think about the first time you threw your gloves up in the air and became part of that huge pileup on top of the poor goalie who just helped you win a tournament, and how you can still name almost every player off that team (and probably also give the number they wore also).

Remember all those great times you’ve had over the years, and how much your life is what it is because of chasing around a piece of rubber every winter. You may someday become “too busy” to play regularly, but you know because of back then and your years now that you will always be a hockey player at heart. Even if you become a beer league-retiree, you will always feel the instant comradeship of meeting a stranger who plays the game.

I just want to prompt everyone who didn’t have the best season this year because of politics and off-ice stuff to remember purer times and think about how much you love the game. Chances are you lads are done playoffs, so start getting pumped for next year. August isn’t too far off!

This brought bak some memories to, This season was a rollercoaster, we started off top team in the league then the gm brought in some new guys from jra and sent down a couple of the guys, we slipped down to 5th in the div. Then the captains had a meeting with the coaches and got those boys bak. By the trade deadline we had made it bak to 1st, and then the gm brings in two shitshows from out of town(paid to get on) and it was down hill again, lost second round to a team we swept in the season.

definitely alll true...ive witnessed the bull-shit political game first-hand too many times.

but this year, i was blessed to play on a travel team that had absolutely none of that shit. half the team had known each other since the beginer/initiation days. we had 2 awesome coaches that knew how to motivate each one of us individually and as a team. put that all together with some new talent and parents that trusted the coaches decisions, we were a solid family ( i would compare it to the 1980 US olympic team from MiRACLE).

we ended up second in our league (behind a team that went on to a state championship and a decent run to nationals) and were knoked out of the state tourny from a group of hometown refs (the other team had 6 powerplay goals en route to a 8-6 win/heartbreaker)

we had no super-stars, just a group of blue-collar brothers playing "Old-Time HOckey". On the ice and off the ice we were always together.

The end of the year was sad, because next year we are not gonna be together as a team like we assumed we would. but our coaches didnt get the team we would have to play for and players are scattering to probably 3 different organizations next season and one goalie goin to juniors.

im expecting the political bull-shit next year, its almost inevitible. but i will always remeber these guys and all the things that made us a family. i could only hope for a team that is half as much of a family as we were ever again.

until then i will play old time hockey and hold true to what it meant to be part of that team. hopefully every one of you could be as lucky as me to be part of something so great and true to the game that became our first love.

GORDIE!!!--always remember

thanks a lot man :D, this past few months has been a gonger and a half for me (losing by atleast 6 goals every game isn't fun) and remembering the years as a little kid reminded me how much fun the game can be, just wanted to spread the message to everyone incase they needed it

Solid article and it's all so true. Sometimes you forget that it's really just about having fun and thinking about those times when you were younger definately make you remember the simpler times. Good job, dude.
