The Kerrzy Report Rockets Burn Out-Big second period lifts Knights
Posted by Kerrzy on Tuesday, May 24, 2005
It took two goals each from the likes of Corey Perry and Drew Larman after Kelowna scored 39 seconds into the first period, but the London Knights remained undefeated Monday as they took on the defending champion Rockets winning by a score of 4-2.

At one point early in the first period the Rockets were up 8-0 in shots and leading 1-0 on a pretty goal by the big Tyler Bodie who drove the puck in wide, cut across the crease and stickhandled around Knights goalie Adam Dennis.

From there the Knights were playing very sloppy hockey until the 7:16 mark when Drew Larman picked up the puck on a bad giveaway by Darren Deschamps and fired a hard wrist shot blocker-side on Westblom to tie the game up at 1-1.

The London Knights picked up their game almost immediately after that goal and began to play with a lot more intensity. They almost went ahead early in the second period when Jordan Foreman fired a low shot from outside the blueline that Kelowna’s Westblom never saw. The puck hit the left post, hit the right post and then was seemingly cleared off of the line by the stick of Westblom.

The play went to the video goal judges and after about 5 minutes of deliberation it was deemed no-goal, which was no doubt a huge relief for Westblom and the Rockets.

At about the same time that they scored during the first frame, London’s Corey Perry burst over the line on a 2-on-1. Perry waited and held the puck while the defenseman dove and sprawled out in an attempt to poke check but Perry pulled it back, fired a shot and then knocked in his own rebound to put his team up by one.

Perry’s next bit of magic would come thanks to an ugly hit from behind by Kelowna’s Chris Ray on Brandon Prust who was a few feet from the boards without the puck which earned him a 4-minute sit in the box.

On the power play Corey Perry was manning the point and after some good puck movement the give and go one-timer pass from Schremp came and Perry nailed it with a slapshot to the left corner on Kristofer Westblom extending the lead to 2.

To make sure that lead stayed at 2, Adam Dennis was called upon to make some big saves including one that had Brent Howarth left all alone in front but he was denied by Dennis’ blocker hand.

Drew Larman came up big again 6:50 into the third period when he picked up a loose puck, stepped over the blueline and unleashed a slapshot using the defenseman as a screen, putting it crossbar and in on the far side.

It looked as though Kelowna might start a comeback at the halfway point of the period with an unlikely hero stepping up. While short handed, the puck left the Kelowna zone and defenseman Darren Deschamps won the race to the puck in the neutral zone, put the puck between the defenseman’s legs as he went for the hit and then roofed it on Adam Dennis at 10:46.

The Rockets had the goalie pulled and did their best to mount a further attack on the London Knights to pull even, but it wasn’t in the cards for Jeff Truitt and his boys on this night as they fall to 0-2.

It’ll be a long road back for the defending champions if they want to repeat, although it’s never been done in tournament history from a 0-2 start. The Knights lace up tomorrow night again the Ottawa 67’s in a rematch of this years OHL finals, which the Knights won 4-1; but Ottawa will be riding high after the big double OT win against Kelowna so expect a good one!
