Junior Hockey Americans Set to Explode in Canada
Posted by allin44 on Saturday, December 24, 2005
Ahhhh yes, it’s a typical winter here in Canada, frigid temperatures, the snow is falling, the outdoor rinks are getting to be in their prime, and the Americans are the favorites going into the World Juniors. Wait. Americans? Hockey? Favourites? Seriously? Yep

To all the Canadians that were running their mouths last year when Canada steamrolled every team en route to a gold medal. Watch out. The Americans are good this year, very, very good.

If last year Canada was the best team that’s ever competed in the World Junior event, the Americans may be running a close second this year. While they don’t have Adam Banks, Fulton Reed or Charlie Conway, listen to these names, Jack Johnson, Brian Lee, Kris Chucko, Robbie Schremp, Chris Bourque, Bobby Ryan, oh, and they’ve got this kid named Kessel too.

Goaltending
The Americans appear to have a pretty solid duo in Jeff Frazee(38th Overall, 2005 draft) out of Minnesota, and Cory Schneider(26th overall, 2004 draft) who plays at Boston College. Both of these tendies are more than capable of being the #1.

Defense
With the likes of Jack Johnson and Brian Lee anchoring the blueline, the Americans are going to be a tough team to score goals against. With the average blueliner for the Americans being about 6’2 and over 200 pounds, forwards are going to take a lot of punishment in the corners. None of the d-men here are afraid to take the body, or get dirty down low.

Offense

Crosby – Bergeron – Perry. Remember the hype surrounding this trio? Try a Kessel – Schremp – Ryan on for size. This team will be one of the most run and gun offenses you will ever witness. Kessel has world class speed and can do some sick dangles while going full tilt. He’s also projected to be a #1 pick, with Canadian
Jonathon Toews also in the running to be the first name called in June.

Schremp, well, hes Robbie Schremp. In case you haven’t heard, he’s kind of a big deal. With 78 points in just 27 games this season, Schremp has shown he will be one of the best young players to play in the NHL next year(and make no doubt about it, he WILL be in the show next season).

And, Bobby Ryan, he’s only a #2 draft pick. He’s a big, solid, dependable two way player. He has some sick moves, and has posted 73 points in 33 games with Owen Sound of the OHL this year. Whether or not they give him a letter or not is to be seen, but he will be a leader both on and off the ice for this team.

Lets face it, this is the Americans tournament to lose(IF Russia can get their shit together, get some decent goaltending and Malkin catches fire, they may be able to stop them). The only real question surrounding these guys is how cohesive of a team they can be. It’s a well known fact that a number of players on the US don’t like each other, but in the past few years, they have been able to put their differences aside and be successful in the U-18 tournament.

But in true Canadian style, we WILL rock the house in Vancouver at GM Place, get drunk doing it. This tournament is sick to watch every year, and nothing is better then getting together with the lads and tossing a few sodas back and watching some world class hockey.

Anyways, Merry Christmas to everybody out in Gongshow land, and I’m waiting for one of you to beak Kessel for having to wear the proverbial “bird cage”. Because we all know he is a skirt.

Too bad ur only good because our best players are in the show already... why dont you try on a crosby brule latendresse for size?... In case you havent heard of sidney crosby... he kind of a big deal. Same goes for brule, he's kind of a big deal too with four goals in seven games... in the show. Don't kid urself... the usa will never be better than the great white north.

Re: Americans Set to Explode in Canada

Yeah to bad Brule's been busted since the start of the season, and you know what? Crosby could still play in the WJC, but the Penguins said they wouldn't let him go. Get over yourself, the US top guns will be in the show in another year and some of them will be doing just as well if not better than the guys from up north will be.

That has nothing to do with the article son. I simply stated, that with the players that are rostered, in this tournament, that the US is icing one of the best teams in recent memory. There is still an off chance that they will falter and fuck themselves over and not win. But they are with a doubt the favourite coming into this tournament, and don't kid yourself otherwise.

you said russia was the only team who could stop you... we killed them 7-1...

Can you read? I said I'm Canadian so I'm not even writing this being biased and from the States. As for Russia, they just stopped trying after 4-1, and with Malkin inthe line-up. they might be able to string some games together.

Canada could still win it, but they are a darkhorse coming in

don't worry allin, plugs like this kid come and go.

its not only allin saying that the US has a stronger-than-usual team, its EVERYONE. Read the paper sometime you plug

Oh god Im not worried at all haha. Its just embarassing to think that people from the greatest hockey nation on earth can't admit that their team might not be the best this year.

Yeah it's pretty funny to read what some of these kids have to say.

It's not that Canada might not have the best team, they're the younger team and on paper the US looks like they've got a good squad...Canada's boys usually gel well enough to grind out the points when they need them. I can't wait to see it get under way tomorrow.

i assumed that the writer was american and was kind of offended by the implied write off of the canadian squad when he said... "Lets face it, this is the Americans tournament to lose(IF Russia can get their shit together, get some decent goaltending and Malkin catches fire, they may be able to stop them)." They are obviously the favorite this year but i don't see how you can imply that the russians are the only ones with a chance to stop them when we stomed them. I'll be the first to admit that the u.s. is unreal this year. Kessel and schremp are two of my favorite young guns, but don't write off canada be4 the tourney starts.

I didnt mean to write the Canadians off, they can win this tournament, but coming in they would be 3rd or 4th ranked.

Im from manitoba. And I think its time that people respected the fact that the Americans are catching up to us in hockey. The Development program they have down there is world class.

The one thing that will hurt them is that all of their offensive stars openly hate one another

Re: Americans Set to Explode in Canada
        by Crossbar25 on Saturday, December 24, 2005
Anybody know why they hate each other so much?

Re: Americans Set to Explode in Canada

It has something to do with their parents I beleive. As well, a lot of them play at colleges and universities that are very heated rivals with one another. But, that said, and in response to Kerrzy as well, they have bonded together and been pretty successful at the U-18 tournament before.

it's this group specifically that really dislike one another.

Kessel chose not to play for Wisconsin (even though he's from there) because Skille was going there. According to Bob MacKenzie "they openly dislike each other" as in they won't pass each other the puck because they really aren't happy that the other guy is even on the team.

Hopefully that is what takes them down.

It also has something to do with their parents. I think it was Skilles mom that was always beaking crosby and johnson when they played together at Shattuck.

Legend has it that she yelled "Your a pylon" to crosby before a faceoff, and crosby woen the draw, went in, and deked the goalie right out of his can. She shut upa fter that apparently.

Yeah its apparently Skilles mom that has caused a ton of adversity

I don't think it's got anything to do with Crosby...it's Kessel and Skille; even if it's their parents, the kids definitely dislike each other though so it'll be interesting to see how it pans out. Good article though buddy, good read.

ya ya i know.. i didnt mean to imply it had anything to do with crosby, but yeah.. apparently skilles mom is a nut and has created a rift among a lot of the players
