The Kerrzy Report Oilers slip-up in Raleigh, lose Roloson
Posted by Kerrzy on Tuesday, June 06, 2006
The Edmonton Oilers looked like the Boys on the Bus early on in the opening game of the 2006 Stanley Cup finals, but it was short lived as the Carolina Hurricanes stormed back with a four-goal third period to take game one by a score of 5-4. An aerial assault by the Oilers’ Ales Hemsky on a third period power play tied the game at fours with about six and a half minutes left, but with under a minute to go, a lapse in communication behind the Edmonton net by Oilers captain Jason Smith and backup goalie Ty Conklin led to Rod Brind’amour’s second empty-net-tap-in of the night, putting the ‘Canes ahead for good. Ty Conklin came into the game with 5:54 remaining after Edmonton’s Marc-Andre Bergeron sent Carolina rookie Andrew Ladd right into would-be Conn Smythe candidate Dwayne Roloson on the tail end of an innocent-looking drive to the net. As Ladd was trying to get a handle on a pass from teammate Ray Whitney and cut across to the front of the Oilers’ net, Bergeron charged at him from behind and sent him spinning into Roloson, who went down immediately in obvious pain after Ladd and Bergeron both landed on his right pad. Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said in the news conference after the game that Roloson would be out for the remainder of the series, leaving the goaltending duties up to Ty Conklin and Jussi Markkanen.

The Oilers’ Fernando Pisani opened the scoring with his 10th of the playoffs 8:18 into the first period on an easy tap-in after a Raffi Torres deflection that Carolina’s rookie goaltender Cam Ward managed to get in front of to round out the first period scoring.

Midway through the second period Edmonton was awarded a penalty shot by referee Mick McGeough which the Oilers’ Chris Pronger capitalized on, shooting low and to the stick side of Ward after Carolina defenseman Niclas Wallin closed his hand on the puck in the ‘Canes crease.

Just six minutes later, Ward was beaten by a weak Ethan Moreau wrist shot from the half-boards that hit ‘Canes defenseman Aaron Ward, changing directions on Cam Ward as it put the Oilers up 3-0.

Before the period was done, Carolina captain Rod Brind’amour brought his team to within two as he drove to the net and picked up a rare Roloson-rebound, slotting the puck into the empty cage for his 10th of the extra season.

In the third frame, former Oiler stickboy Ray Whitney scored 1:40 in off of a slick pass by former Oiler captain Doug Weight and then again at 5:09 on the power play.

Carolina’s Justin Williams capped off a run of four unanswered goals by the Hurricanes with a shorthanded tally when he hopped on a Steve Staios giveaway at the offensive blueline and blew it past Roloson to give the ‘Canes the 4-3 lead.

Edmonton out-shot the Hurricanes 38-26 through three periods with the Oilers going 1-for-7 with the extra man and Carolina converting once on five tries.

Game two goes on Wednesday and is again a 6 pm start (Mountain) at the RBC Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.

No way, the dream is over
