The Kerrzy Report "Alberta Bound"
Posted by Kerrzy on Thursday, June 08, 2006
Should the Oilers be the first to post that elusive sixteenth with of the postseason, the Stanley Cup will make it’s way to the prairies; but win or lose, the holy grail of hockey is Alberta bound. Whether it’s the Ryan Smyth-Fernando Pisani-Jason Smith trio leading the charge for the Oilers, or the Ray Whitney-Mike Commodore-Glen Wesley-Cam Ward quadruplet grabbing the reins for the Hurricanes, this will be a good spring for Alberta hockey...Read More

The production of local Edmonton product Fernando Pisani is a big reason the Oilers have made it as far as they have this postseason, scoring key goals at key times all throughout the playoffs. Right now his nine goals has him tied for first overall in playoff goals with Carolina’s Rod Brind’amour who, like Pisani, also has three game winning goals.

Banff, Alberta’s Ryan Smyth is in his seventh playoff campaign with the Edmonton Oilers and is followed closely by Calgary, Alberta’s Jason Smith who is playing in his fifth postseason as a member of the Oilers; and the fearless style of hockey that they play is a big reason that they’re followed closely by the rest of the team.

On the other side, Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, has had its fair share of exposure this year.

Ray Whitney and Mike Commodore of the Carolina Hurricanes are the lone Fort Saskatchewan residents left in the playoffs, though Whitney’s neighbor, Joffrey Lupul is still tied with Pisani and Brind’amour for the playoff lead in goals with nine.

Commodore, who’s in his second Stanley Cup final in as many seasons, is joined on defense by Glen Wesley, another product of Alberta hailing from Red Deer and, of course, by rookie sensation Cam Ward from Sherwood Park, Alberta, who has posted an 11-5 record between the pipes for the ‘Canes in his first trip to the playoffs.

Another player to watch is Carolina’s Doug Weight who spent just over eight seasons with the Edmonton Oilers, captaining the team from 1999-2001. Weight was traded at the deadline this season from the St. Louis Blues to the Carolina Hurricanes and is now appearing in his first ever Stanley Cup final.

Let’s go Oilers!

Moral of the Story: It’s a good time to be an Albertan!
