On Saturday, June 17, record numbers in terms of showers and rainfall were written in Fort McMurray, AB. Streets were flooded, cars were wrecked, and TVs just weren’t turning on. 500 km south of Fort McMurray, in a little town called Edmonton, a similar event was taking place, inside of Rexall Place.
A struggling Oiler’s PP managed to pot 3 gino’s, while Raffi Torres did all the work on an unassisted even-strength goal in the 2nd, for a final of 4-0, their third win in four games. The team played stellar defence, allowing a wounded Carolina offense only 16 shots the entire game, allowing Jussi Markannen to register the first post-season shutout of his career. Cam Ward played another strong game to hold the fort for his team, however, things just seemed to be going right for the Oilers on this night, as they capitalised on the chances they generated. Suddenly, a struggling bunch of Oilers turned into a striving team, while the Carolina Hurricanes were drowned by the rainfall of Oilers success....CONTINUED
One positive note for Carolina was the surprise return of winger Eric Cole. Cole season’s was said to have come to an end in early March when he suffered a broken neck, but he did not disappoint, playing 18 minutes, and was as much a threat all night as any Hurricane player. Cole’s return helped take some if the load off of the Canes’ backs, as they had just lost a veteran Doug Weight after Game 5.
The series now heads back to Carolina, where the most anticipated game of all games in hockey, Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals, will take place. Carolina will obviously be hoping to generate more offense, while Edmonton will look to mimic their Saturday night performance. No one can be sure of the events that will take place, as hockey fans we all know, anything can and will happen in a Game 7. However, there is one thing we can all be sure of, the Stanley Cup will be awarded Monday night. This story will soon come to a close, and it is only a matter of time before we know how it will end. Will the greatest underdogs in NHL history complete the task they set out to do, or will the Holy Grail enjoy an extended vacation, partying on the warm beaches of Carolina? |
