Some may come out on the ice with the track suit, clipboard, pilons, the whole deal. Others wear an old winter coat and a pair of old tube-skates that get chirped hard week-in and week-out. Old-school, new-school, any way their style is, that guy lightly skating around with the whistle is the coach.
Almost every year growing up there's a new coach skating around, and sure some have been pricks, some you didn’t like, but every once in a while something clicks and there's a coach that makes a difference.
He’s probably played for way bigger crowds, in much bigger games, and sure as hell made a hell of a lot more money than whatever change the team is tossing him over (if any). There he is anyways… day in and day out, just trying to help out some kids and pass on a few secrets he’s picked up in a lifetime of hockey.
He’s the one that sees you as more than another name to fill out the roster and shoves out on the ice. This coach sees it in you, and you can sit back in the summer after and really think about the skills and opportunities you were given and how much better of a player you have become. (CONTINUED)
This guy isn’t some doormat who lets you scrimmage all day ever day, but tries to make it all fun. He’ll to chirp back at the lads when they carve him for his ancient gear he’s wearing for practise, but he’s not afraid to toss out a shitstorm of trouble when the boys really need an ass kicking to get playing.
In the end when the passes slow down and the scouts aren’t there, you’ll realize how much the game has given to you, and just how much you really owe it. You’ll be at the rink and see every kid lined up waiting for the zamboni while it still has four more laps to go.
You’ll remember that enthusiasm and excitement as a kid to get to go play real HOCKEY, even better than the video games or the countless hours in the driveway with a tennis ball and a half-broken stick scoring the Cup-winner again and again.
You'll think about those days in praccy when they'd teach you over and over how to make that saucer pass, how to play that two on one, to tip that puck out of your zone, to blast that one-timer, hell, hack that son of a bicth in front of the net in juuust the right spot... How they encouraged the passion you had for the game and made you that much better...
Maybe coaching isn't right for you, but just make sure to give back to the game because you know how well it’s treated you. Get out there and ref, coach, fundraise; drive the damn zamboni for all I care… Just go out there and try to pitch in a little bit to spread the love and passion you have for the game. |
