In what has really always been a Canadian tradition over the years, Hockey Canada recently sent a horribly talented team of junior-aged players to an international tournament.
Now, if you didn’t hear about the Junior World Cup a few weeks ago (the 8th until the 12th of August), the boys that comprised Team Canada are the best of the ‘89s, who are said to be the deepest talent pool since Sid Crosby and the ‘85s.
As you would expect after an introduction like that, they dominated the tournament going in as the favorites, going 4-0 and outscoring their opposition 16-4 (and if you count their pre-tournie exhibition with the co-host Czechs, 21-4).
The tournament was capped off with a 3-0 win over the USA in the gold medal game.
Bryan Cameron of the OHL’s Belleville Bulls and the Calgary Hitmen’s Brett Sonne combined for 56% of Canada’s goals, 4 and 5 respectively, and Medicine Hat’s Tyler Ennis was right there too, with a goal in the final and points in three of four games.
I spoke to Ennis about the finals, winning the gold and the overall experience after the final game from Slovakia as the team celebrated. READ MORE...

JK: What were the highlights of todays game for you?
TE: Second goal of the game…it was a 4-on-4 and it was a 2-on-1. I had the puck and I carried it wide and I dished it through the d-man’s stick to Sonne and Sonne just buried it shortside. And the third goal was with 5 minutes left in the game and Sutter just drove it to the net and the puck was just layin’ there for me. I came in and just bashed it in shortside too and then just a big celebration after that.
JK: How did it feel to come up big against the States?
TE: It felt unreal. In the U-17 challenge we lost to the States in the semi-finals. It just felt awesome to get revenge on them and just the matter of a team gold medal is absolutely unbelievable.
JK: Tell me about the overall experience…
TE: It’s different over here, the way of life over here is a lot different than Canada, but it just adds to the excitement and it adds to all the emotion when we won that gold medal. It’s a great feeling.
JK: Are you looking forward to coming home?
TE: Chris Russell on my team and Cam Barker have both won gold medals at the U-18 so it’s gonna be awesome to go back to the Hat and talk to the boys about it…it’s just awesome.
