You watched the first quarter of the NHL season and then you picked a team, you are two short of your 500th career goal and you are a power play specialist in an age of hockey where the man-advantage rules all. You are Peter Bondra.
Bondra had to know it was only a matter of time before he would become the 37th player in NHL history to surpass the 500-goal mark, and in the end it took him six games with the Chicago Blackhawks to hit the milestone. What a great way to start a season, but you know that's not the last time you'll hear his name. READ MORE...
Last year with the Atlanta Thrashers he was on pace for a possible 50-goal campaign before a knee injury sidelined him and he came up way short, ending up with 21 goals and 39 points in 60 games. That he managed to still score as many goals as he did was important to preserve an unbelievable 14-year streak of consecutive 20+ goal seasons.
Imagine Peter Bondra dishing to Ilya Kovalchuk and Marion Hossa on the Atlanta Thrasher team we’re seeing now, the team that’s currently sitting at second in the East through 36 games. I’m sure Atlanta GM Don Waddell is trying not to think about it.
The fact is, he’s with the Blackhawks now and seems to be fitting in quite well with Marty Havlat, who has made a huge impact so far since returning to the lineup and the rest of the team. Did Denis Savard actually turn things around in Chicago?
It looks like that may be the case as they’re at least playing .500 hockey right now, which is an improvement on Chicago being the joke of a team that they’ve been for the last couple of years. If Marty Havlat keeps scoring and Peter Bondra can chip in a few, and if their young defensemen mature a little bit, the Blackhawks might make a bit of noise this season.
As weird as it is to see Pittsburgh with more wins than losses, I find it more awkward to see Chicago with a winning record, albeit one game over .500 after back-to-back 43 loss seasons.
Let’s see if they prove me wrong.
