Hockey Headlines North Dakota D-Man Takes one for the Team
Posted by MAC@GSH on Tuesday, February 20, 2007
Forward: Hockey boys seem to always have each others back eh?! The following story, even though i admit was a poor decision on his part, is not surprising to me and just re-inforces how strong the bond is between hockey players. What other athletes would do this for their team mates? If i heard this story about anyone else i would say what an idiot, but for some reason when its about hockey boys, it doesnt seem so bad....Anyone else feel like this? Read on.....let me know. MAC GRAND FORKS, N.D. — North Dakota defenseman Robbie Bina will face a misdemeanor charge in connection with an incident at a Grand Forks tavern last weekend, multiple sources are reporting. The charge against Bina, 24, will be one of "escaping custody," which is a Class B misdemeanor offense punishable by a maximum of a $1,000 fine or 30 days in jail. The incident in question occurred at Judy's Tavern and included six minors — including Bina's Fighting Sioux teammates Jonathan Toews and T.J. Oshie — who were cited for being underage in a bar. Bina opened the CONTINUED BELOW

door of a patrol car in which two of the minors were being held and then walked away, Grand Forks city prosecutor Kristi Pettit said Saturday.

Bina's problems could be significant even if he is acquitted of the latest charge. WDAZ-TV reports that the junior blueliner was already on probation for driving while intoxicated on July 15 of last year, at which time he was given a suspended sentence on the condition that he avoid further legal entanglements.

The current charge against Bina could represent a violation of his probation, which could in turn lead to a 10-day jail sentence being reinstated.

Bina, Oshie and Toews are all scheduled to appear in court Feb. 12.

North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol has not commented on the situation, and none of the players has yet been suspended by the team

I don't understand what the big deal is with Toews and Oshie in the first place. They were arrested for simply being in a bar. It says nothing about them drinking. I'm sure they were, but they weren't charged with underage drinking. North Dakota has some crazy rules, cause I've been going to bars since I was 16.

different bars have different rules.. the bar where i live got a new contract that allowes under-aged people to go to but they cannot drink. American bars are probably different

i agree it wasn't the smartest thing to do because even if they got away they'd be caught, but he was sticking up for the two guys w/ huge futures and at the time wasn't being selfish and thinking about only himself, so cudos go out to him even though it was the smartest move in hindsight

regardless of whether they were hockey boys or not, he's a fucking idiot for doing that. Make an example of him and give him 30 days in the county.

He was definately helpin' out his teammates there. Those young guys could get in a shitload of trouble especially considering they were probably using fake ID's. I go to college in the Northeast and a bunch of schools along with mine have strict penalties related to underage drinking in bars in the surrounding area. Many of them hold a zero-tolerance policy which in turn forces coaches to remove the players from the roster for that season. He probably had the idea in mind that he was saving their season. What he did was pretty ballsy and only something a hockey player would do. You wouldn't see any basketball players doing that because they would either 1) all be in the back of police cars or 2) couldn't risk their parole.

There's definatly a commraderie there. he probly couldnt stand to let his teamates go down like that and felt obligated to try and bail them out. He knows that those 2 guys have a huge future ahead of them too. although it was pretty irresponsible, everybody makes mistakes, including oshie and toews by goin to the bar and gettin pinched, but stuff happens.
