Close to one-hundred people gathered on July 2nd at the Murr Center, Harvard’s home rink, to hear the announcement that 1991 Harvard graduate/former Harvard player and 13 year NHL-veteran Ted Donato was being named the Harvard Crimson’s 2004-2005 Head Coach.
Donato has played on a national championship team in his 4 years at Harvard (144 points in 106 games) being named the tournament MVP in 1989, at the international level as a member of Team USA’s Olympic national program, and with the Bruins, Islanders, Senators, Ducks, Stars, Kings, Blues and Rangers of the NHL as well as a few AHL teams and a Finnish team.
“I am very excited. I put this up with some of the great things that have happened in my life. As far as athletics are concerned, the day I was drafted by the Bruins was very special. Winning a national championship is right at the top, and this goes right in line,†said Donato in a speech at the press conference.
Team Captain Noah Welch said that “when we found out that (Donato) was putting his name in, he was definitely someone we wanted to meet,†adding that “when he was a player here, Harvard was at the top in college hockey. Now that we have a pretty good team, we think that with his confidence and experience, he can help us make that jump.â€
Former coach Mark Mazzoleni, a Green Bay-area native, had gone 64-57-10 since taking over as head coach in 1999, but stepped down after this past season after being offered a head coaching position with the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL. In his 5 seasons with the team Mazzoleni lead the Crimson to two ECAC titles and made three straight appearances in the NCAA tournament.
“[Donato] is the personification of Harvard's academic and athletic philosophy. Beyond that, he is someone whom young people can admire. A pee-wee hockey player can look at what Ted Donato has accomplished and tell himself, "If I work hard enough - then maybe I can go to Harvard and win championships ... maybe I can make the Olympic team ... maybe I can play for the Boston Bruins ... and maybe I can do all of this while being a great teammate, a great student and a great person like Ted Donato,†said Bob Scalise, Harvard’s Director of Athletics, who took time to praise Mazzoleni’s contribution to the team over his past 5 years as well as Donato’s credentials.
This looks like a solid move for the school, as Donato appears to have all the credentials of a winning coach. Only time will tell, but should Donato bring the NCAA title back to Harvard you can bet he’ll be hailed as a hero at that school.
