With the loss of Fighting Sioux Head Coach Dean Blais, who will join the NHL’s Columbus Blue Jackets as an Assistant Coach, North Dakota looked no further than their own current coaching staff to take over the reins.
After being recommended by Blais, the then-interim Coach Dave Hakstol was named on July 9th as the new Head Coach after four years as an Associate coach with the program.
Hakstol is a graduate of North Dakota, playing for the Fighting Sioux from 1989-92, captaining the team twice. Having played professionally for four-years in the now defunct IHL, his resume also includes four-years as the Head Coach/GM of the USHL’s Sioux City Musketeers, a tenure which included coach of the year honors in 1997-98.
The Fighting Sioux (2003-2004: 30-8-5) look to have another strong team this year to defend their WCHA championship, and improve on their NCAA tournament results from last year where they lost to Maine in the quarter-finals.
With 4 of 5 top scorers returning and a very strong defensive core they will for sure be looking to be ranked very highly again this season, although they will have to deal with the loss of NHL prospect and Hobey Baker finalist, Zach Parise, who signed with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils.
