Well boys, it’s been a while since it happened, but I still think you guys should hear about it. This is about the shit that happens at rinks across the country. From crazed hockey dads jumping on the ice, to fights in the stands, hallways, and in the parking lot; hockey has always had that intensity that seems to bring out the best, and the worst in people. We’ve all been in games that you look back on and realize “Holy shit that was dumb”, or “That was unreal, we really showed our pride on that one”. But sometimes, things just go too far.
Here’s my story: After being home from school for a week already over Xmas break, the local junior teams season was about to start up again with an away game in the rival town of Kimberley. Knowing all the shit that’s happened in previous years between our two teams (from Kimberley refs being hit in the head with a fish, to garbage cans and anything else in sight being thrown at our home town boys by rival fans), and the added incentive that a few of my good buddies are still living the dream at home playing their final year of junior before jumping into the real world, I just had to go. So a few of the boys hop into my car and make the hour and a half trip down the road. It’s just like old times, bringing up the same beaks we’ve been using since the days of road hockey in ’96, add in some new stories about the college life, and you’ve got yourself a night to remember. While we did expect a night filled with some on-ice scraps, and possibly a couple arguments with some of the other fans (Since 2 of the boys were in the back seat working on a couple cases of beer on the way up), what we got into was NOT in the itinerary.
We walk up the stairs into the rink, always grabbing a few looks from their home town fans, and of course their ladies; but it wasn’t until we got to the concession to grab a beer did we have our first confrontation. “Well that’s an ugly piece of shit jersey isn’t it, just like you.” Some not so sober and not so skinny fan says to our Tommy-tough-guy who’s sporting an old, vintage jersey of our team. Now usually this would result in some R rated language, possibly followed by a few fisticuffs, but we were on our game that night, and really didn’t want to be kicked out before warm-ups. So after an exchange of words between the two, all was settled down and we went to find our seats. The game was great. Some fast paced junior hockey was a nice change up from watching girls university basketball games as my only form of entertainment. At about the start of the third period the game starts to get chippy; nothing too serious, one fight and some angry coaches is all. But then, at around the ten minute mark all hell breaks loose. Apparently the home town fans didn’t like seeing their tough guy get beat up by a rookie, and shit started to fly. After some friendly beaks were thrown at the players’ benches from above, by both sides, admittedly, the players started to notice the commotion. Just when the C’s and A’s were having some words with the refs, the second most ignorant thing I have ever seen happened. A fan from the other team walks up to the glass and throws a cup full of chew spit at the Fernie captain. Are you fucking kidding me? You just don’t do that to a guy. So a couple of our fans go over to tune this kid up, and as the security guards (only 2 in the whole arena) were throwing him out, the first most ignorant thing I have ever seen happened. A little ways away from where the commotion was going on, a second little prick dumped out a beer cup and started to piss in it. Yes, you know where I’m going with this. Before anyone could get over there to stop him, the kid had the cup full of piss and was running to our bench. He threw it over, and pretty much covered the head coach and captain, along with a few other players. You can’t be serious, right? Who in their right mind would do something like that? It was the absolute unclassiest thing I have ever seen. I mean, we’ve all been in some fights that probably could have been avoided, but come on; throwing PISS is just too far.
So after this douche bag gets the shit pumped out of him (and I really feel sorry for the other Kimberley fans, because they weren’t AS bad, but were still defending what he did), the game got called off, cops were called, and all the Fernie fans had to be escorted out of the town, because there were still some rowdy ass holes trying to chase down some of our fans. A possible great night out with the boys turned into a shit show because of two idiots. It really makes you think, how far is too far? We’ve all done some dumb shit before, but I have to say I’ve never seen anything like that in my life. It was disgusting, and I hope that those two guys are never allowed to a game again. |

That's just pathetic. I can't believe no one beat the shit out of this guy. In my town he would not of made it out of the rink without some major injuries.

Thats just unclassy. Being a fan and going to rival rinks ive seen some nasty stuff but none of that extent. Its just a game that had to be ruined by some idiot people.

i played in the ki about 3 years ago and kimberly had a decent team and barely any fans but fernie was the greatest place to play we played our final season game there and some fans got into the after at the fernie arena and started throwing shit (literally) at the rockies team that was the only game of the season that i still remember cause u never expect to have shit thrown at u in any sport.

That's insane. Don't even know how someone can even condone that ... whether its a friend or a fellow fan.
I guess this isn't as bad, but it just reminded me back when the CHL last had interleague games between the OHL and QMJHL. The Ottawa/Hull rivalry had to be one of the worst.
The last year the interleague matchups happened, Hull was in Ottawa and were leading by one goal with a couple minutes left. Ottawa tied it up with 0.7 seconds left. Ottawa then won the game in OT in the first couple seconds (from what I remember). The teams were going off the ice - this was before they made one team wait, so they are all getting off the ice together. One Hull player proceeds to jumps Sebastien Savage from behind in the lobby area of the two dressing rooms. All hell breaks loose. I was told that the SWAT team was called in (I don't know if that was just rumours), but both teams were sent to their dressing rooms... No one from the 67's could leave until Hull was on the road.
Same year... in Hull, I remember seeing grown men (Hull fans) throwing garbage and intentionally spilling beer on little children in 67's jerseys. Someone finally got fed up and talked to security. The security guard said, "If you don't like it, go back to Ottawa." It was just complete mayhem from there.
I've been to several other games in Hull and the fans aren't nearly as bad. This was them taking the whole French/English rivalry to a whole new level... and the next year, the CHL cancelled all interleague games.

Exactly right? I mean like we used to throw a live chicken on the ice every game, it was a good time. But this is just too far.

my freshman year of HS puck, a fan through a live chicken on the ice, then got arrested for animal cruelty...

Haha. Well this is a pretty small town where everyone knows everyone and such.. so it wasn't bad, when Darcy came in with the chicken, all the authorities turned a blind eye and watched as a poor rookie would have to chase the thing around for a while.
