With the 2005/2006 NHL hockey season still in a state of gloom uncertainty, one can only imagine what will fill the void for all those die hard hockey fans. Perhaps going to the local junior, college or minor hockey rink to catch a game might be the answer; however my bet is on something else.

This is something that has taken the North American public by storm. And NO it’s not William Hung’s CD release or Paris Hilton’s sex tape. It’s reality T.V! Americans and Canadians alike have become glued to their T.V. screens since the inception of shows such as Survivor, and the Real World. Watching people go through trials and tribulations, in day to day situations has become a phenomenon in our culture. Introduce the sport of hockey to the mix and you have half the male population in Canada trading in their nose bleed seats to hold down their couch with a bag of potato chips at home. Not to mention a full case of beer instead of an overpriced $11 draft. Bell Canada and CBC Sports have joined up to give six untouched and possibly overlooked hockey players the opportunity of a life time. A second chance at “Making The Cut” Bell Making The Cut. Six highly trained, and scouted hockey players will be selected through a process of elimination to tryout for each of six Canadian NHL teams while being followed every step of the way. They will undergo months of preparation, hard work, and cameras in their face in order to get their shot with a Canadian club. Being a hockey player myself, and with only 35 days and counting till the shows first airing, I am anxious to see the caliber of players that actually attended these tryouts. I have heard of some guys here in the Ottawa region that played in the OHL, CJHL, and university leagues, but I can imagine that there were many more beer leaguers that tried to make the leap as well. In any event, this show will definitely be something to look out for. Whether it’s a flop or a success, you can bet that there will be many eyes eager to see what happens. I can tell you one thing, these six individuals better hope that the NHL ordeal gets solved fairly quickly, or making the cut might place them in the Quebec senior league with the beer leaguers who were snipped first round. Make the cut or the QSPHL, I’ll be watching.
