Feature Player Todays NHL
Posted by 11Peter11 on Monday, November 02, 2009
Who is the best player in the NHL? Today we marvel at the pure skill of a player such as Alexander Ovechkin and stare in awe at the playmaking abilities of one Sidney Crosby. Although these two players are great athletes and phenomenal hockey players, we are too soon to forget the legends that played the game. Wayne Gretzky has a record of 215 points in one season, last year Evgani Malkin led the league with 113 points. The greatest players in today’s game have a hard time getting to Gretzky’s half way marker. Comparing today’s players with the likes of The Great One is a joke, so who is the NHL’s top guy today?

Alexander Ovechkin is a goal scoring machine. He is one of the most skilled players in league and also one of the most entertaining. Dangling the puck around desperate defensemen is when he is in his glory. He uses his quick feet and bursts of speed to get to the net and when there he makes it count. One deadly weapon in his arsenal is his quick snap shot that catches even the best goalies off guard. Not to mention his ability to score goals from his back. While talented Ovechkin is not modest. He loves to put on a show jumping into the glass or ridiculous cellys that gets the opposing team fired up.

Evgani Malkin is not to be left out of the equation. This Art Ross Trophy winner can play with the best of them. At 6’3 and 195 pounds Malkin is not your typical top point getter. Receiving the Calder Memorial Trophy as the league’s top rookie, Malkin certainly has a resume of a great hockey player.

Sidney Crosby has been followed by media since the young age of 14. This prodigy could be seen racking up 6 goals a game at 14 with the Dartmouth subways, a major midget hockey team full of 17 and 18 yr olds. Since finally making his way into the NHL he has created ripples everywhere he plays in the hockey world. Winning the Art Ross Trophy in his second year, he was the first teenager to ever win a scoring title in any sport. Now he has won the Stanley Cup, being the youngest captain ever to do so.

While these three players have qualities that will put their names in the record books, it isn’t easy to choose “the best” so I’m not going to try. This being the biggest, dirtiest hockey community on the web throw a name in the comments whoever you think is the best hockey player in today’s game.

When trying to look at the best player in the NHL are we looking at success at both ends of the ice. I player that is willing to take a hit for the guy on the bench beside him. A guy who will drop the mitts to prove a point. If so then we are looking for the best all round player the league has to offer. I strongly feel that the best all round player in the NHL today is Iggy. Although having an off season reflects the men around you, there is no question he can score, play make, lead and battle. I'm not saying that Ovi and Sid are not excellent players head of their time. But, at least everyone can find one thing they do not so great. I would much rather have a 90% player in all groups then a player who is 99% in some and 75% in others.

I do agree that Gretzky is obviously the all time great, but the game now is so much faster and the skill around ove' and crosby is better, and not to mention the goalies are alot better. And if i had to pick one to be the best, i would say ovechkin is overall the best player. Its hard to compare crosby and ovechkin cuz there playing styles are somewhat different. Ovechkin is a goal scoring fanatic and crosby is a play maker.

yea i guess that was a bad comparison gretz will always be great but the game is completely different now

Re: Todays NHL

If I have to pick one, I have to say Alexander Ovechkin. He has the all around game.

Re: Todays NHL
by EddyJoe on Thursday, January 21, 2010
Not to take anything away from what the Great One did, but the game is a lot faster now and Gretzky did have Dave Semenko as a "bodyguard". As I watch the game now I don't think that will ever happen again.

Why did the pens win the Stanley not because cause of Crosby it was because of goaltending and defense any bender could stand on the side of the net and slap the puck in the net on a powerplay like Crosby did. The pens had both the caps and the wings outmatched in the goalie postion the pen barely got by the caps who had rookie goalie! the core of their team was defense not crosby he is overated and I would never choose him as a player to build my team around why because there is no excitement watching him you automaticly lean forward in your seat when ovie or even kovi or malkin hits the ice cause there indidviaul skills are exciting and that's what the fans want to watch not
a by the book boring player who can't single handedly change the game like the Russian dangles known as Ovie ,Kovi, and Malkin

    really, crosby overrated..
stupid comment. you should leave the site right now and never come back.
Crosby is definitly exciting to watch, saying he doesnt have that excitment factor, is ludacris. you obviously dont watch much hockey.

215 points is unreal, but the game wasnt as fast as it is today so i think the Great One was just a little ahead of his time. Not beaking his holiness, but im just saying most of the guys who played back then would do fuck all in the chel today.

For the best player, I think right now its sidney crosby - Great leader, Great vision , Great Hands, Great Passing Ability, and hes just all around sick (and hes canadian).

It's a great question and each player brings a little something different to the table

Ovechkin is a pure scorer with an unbelievable shot. He goes balls out every shift.

Crosby is an amazing leader can make anyone around him better. he sees the ice like no one else and works the corners like a madman.

Malkin knows how to score and can do some pretty magical things with the puck. His defense has improved and he is a great backchecker.

All in all, right now I build my team around Crosby. After all, he did Captain the Pens to the Cup last year

Let's get real here boys. We can't compare anybody in today's NHL to the likes of Wayne Gretzky. Nobody is ever going to come close to eclipsing his point totals. The game has simply changed far too much over the course of history. It's clear however, that the talent of Ovechkin, Crosby and Malkin goes above and beyond anyone else in the game today - as was the case in Gretzky's era. You can't simply compare point totals and say Gretzky is better than these guys. Gretzky ran the show in his time, these guys are running the show in theirs. In my opinion however, Ovechkin is the best player in today's NHL. He can change a game instantly and his play can determine almost any outcome. Crosby and Malkin are great players too - but neither possess the raw ability to single handedly take over a game or score at will.

Don't forget Iginla, guy plays hard every shift. Doesn't shy away from the hitting, he'll drop the mitts when needed, and he can make plays and pot gino's too. I know he hasn't gotten the ring yet, but guy is a natural leader with the support and respect of his team and community. Plays with passion, true Canadian player.

Mike Richards brings it all to the game of hockey: a skill set for 5 on 5, powerplay and penalty kill along with 110 % work ethic. He can snipe among the best and yet find the open guy as a playmaker. You combine all this with his hard hitting, tenacious play and it's one well rounded complete hockey player. And then the intangibles of a grinder - dropping the gloves when needed. He wears the C for a reason; he's a born and proven leader. The other guys are all great picks because of their undeniable obvious skill. But Richards brings it to the rink day in and day out and it's why he's the best in the game and why I’d mold my team around Richards.

Pavel Datsyuk does it all, for a little man he has no problem playing the body, backchecking and playing defense, is a clutch player and has hands of a god. no doubt ovie, syd, and malkin are the most talented but datsyuk is not an arrogant plug, he puts up numbers and doesnt need everyone to be looking at him when hes doing it.

Re: Todays NHL
by Steveyy19 on Saturday, November 14, 2009
Personality i thin Ovechkin is the best player in the game. The one worth the price of admission. Crosby and Malkin are gray but i just think ovie has it all the scoring touch he hits plays hard he just has it all. I also think one of the most underatted players and does not get the respect he deserves is Pavel Datstyuk. If theres 1 guy in the league i want to tie the game, to defend the lead to win a key draw to back check its deff. Dats.

Re: Todays NHL
by hixy88 on Thursday, November 05, 2009
the fuck? i'd say it's the complete opposite. ovie is way more skilled, i don't know how you could say otherwise? crosby is the better player, makes those around him better and that's why you want to build your team around him, and that's why he has a cup.

    Re: Todays NHL
    by Ukhockey52 on Thursday, November 05, 2009
No, he has a Cup because of Malkin, Fleury, and a great bunch of roll guys. He has more talent than anybody, but Ovie surpasses him by playing 100% all the time. He throws hits, he scores, he gets everyone fired up. I obviously haven't been in a locker room with either of them, but I get fired up by seeing a guy go out there and score and lay someone on their ass.

      Re: Todays NHL
      by hixy88 on Thursday, November 05, 2009
So you don't think that Crosby elevates the play of those role players, and helps his team by enabling the Coach to seperate him and Malkin? Role players success is usually a direct reflection of the top guys. What is individual talent to you, because I'd say leading the league in scoring and being the most dangerous player in the league with the puck might give Ovie the edge, but if you have a different definition I'm all ears. I've never heard someone say Crosby was more individually talented and doesn't make his teammates better, in fact that's just about the complete opposite every analyst and fan argues. Did you watch the playoffs and how slow Malkin struggled initially? Take Crosby off the team and they were eliminated.

        Re: Todays NHL
        by Ukhockey52 on Friday, November 06, 2009
Ok, the same could be said for Malkin, without him they don't win the cup either. I am not saying that I don't think that Crosby elevates the guys around him, but if I have Ovechkin on my team and I need a goal, I would count on him. I just feel like Crosby is precision and Ovechkin just works hard, 100% all the time. In the end though, comparing the two is pretty difficult.

          Re: Todays NHL
          by hixy88 on Friday, November 06, 2009
Everything you are praising Ovechkin for is individual skill and proving my point. Yes, with 2 minutes left in the game I'd want Ovechkin to have the puck as well, because he is the most individually talented player in the game.

            Re: Todays NHL
            by Shanny123 on Monday, February 22, 2010
to me, i dont think it matters which of the three i have on the ice. Crosby scores, ovie scores, and s does Malkin, even tho he started off slow this season. Id like to have sid out there because hed be able to slow it all down and either snipe or give that perfect pass for a goal. Id have ovie because that wrist shot is unreal. And Malkin because hes just so powerful out there. If he drives you cant stop him.

    Re: Todays NHL
    by 11Peter11 on Thursday, November 05, 2009
This was what I was thinking while writing the article. That Ovechkin was the most skilled player in the show and that crosby was the player that you want on your team to make everyone around him better.

      Re: Todays NHL

A lot of the greatest players to play the game float around and are just always in the right spot. He goes all out to lay hits and beat a guy to an open puck. I am sure Crosby NEVER ever floats on a backcheck...

        Re: Todays NHL
        by 11Peter11 on Monday, November 09, 2009
thats ridiculous the greatest players are in the right spot ALL of the time because they're always one step ahead of every play. they arent floating they're playing smart hockey

          Re: Todays NHL
          by Ukhockey52 on Monday, November 09, 2009
I know this, that is what I said, I was replying to the other guy. Look at Lemieux though, he was always just floating around, but was in the right spot. They can look like the same thing.

ovie playing 100% of the time is hilair, sauce me a vid when you find one of float-vechkin on the backcheck

Re: Todays NHL
by Ukhockey52 on Monday, November 02, 2009
One thing that we cant forget is that the most skilled player and the best player can be two different people. I think Crosby is the most skillful, but if I am picking one to build a team on, its Ovechkin every day. He does things that grinders do(Hit, play the body, etc.), hes a pure scorer and he can make the back door feed as well. Those are the things that put him half a step ahead of Crosby. You can make the case for Malkin as well and it will be fun to see him continually progress.

    Re: Todays NHL
    by chowski28 on Tuesday, November 03, 2009
i agree with you UK. If im building a team, im looking at a player like Ovie or Malkin, a two way player who is strong in the corners at both ends. Crosby may be able to make pretty little plays, Ovie and Malkin can do it themselves. Im excited to see this years rookies progress through the year, especially JVR

      Re: Todays NHL
      by T3_mac on Friday, November 13, 2009
Ovie has to be number one, for me atleast
not only is he the single biggest offensive threat in the game,
he can take the physical play too, and throw some pretty dece hits.

crosby makes guys around im better, but look at the skill the guys around him already have or had before becoming his teammate.....
no disrespect to him or malkin
but Ovechkin has to be number one

kovi has some amazin hands but is poss the laziest player in the nhl but a good enterteiner all the same but if i had one pick it wuld defo be ovi

    Re: Todays NHL

The 3 names that have been thrown around are the obvious choices. Thinking outside those players, I would take Mike Richards, he is a great leader, he can do it all, score, create for other, hit, fight and so on. But outside of those things he is arguably the best penalty killing forward in the show, and was robbed of the Selke last season. Though Crosby is great and is probably the most skilled player in the league, he a little too much a of crier for me. Malkin seems to fade in and out too much, he is another person w/all the talent in the world and looks to take shifts off or disappear from time to time. Finally Ovie is the most electrifying player in the league and change the game in many different aspects, the downside to him is that his celebrations, though sometimes good, become too much when he buries one to put his team up by 5 in October, also his style of play is a little too reckless for such a talent and I think injuries will catch up to him (i.e. Eric Lindros).

Richards is my pick, if I had the #4 selection in building a franchise, and I wouldn't be the least bit disappointed.

      Re: Todays NHL
      by Strainer14 on Tuesday, January 26, 2010
Ovi- dirt goals, many top 10 goals, my favorite player to watch mostly because he gets into the game so much, like every goal it's like his first, jumping into glass, sick cellys, just a exciting player to watch

Now with crosby and malkin they have unbelivable skill, hands and leadership. They act like they have been there and show alot of respect.

It's hard to pick out of the 3 but if I had to it would be Ovi because he gets SO into the game and always willing to try somehing crazy, great for the game
