Hockey Headlines Remove Plastic Coverings
Posted by BNR5 on Friday, February 04, 2011
Injuries seem to be a hot topic in the NHL but doesn’t seem like anyone is coming to any solutions on how to fix them. The NHL is worrying to much about eliminating head shots and preventing injuries, when in reality head shots and injuries will always be in the game. They need to look at ways to reduce these injuries, not eliminate as that is an impossible task.

Don Cheery has been saying this for years: Remove the plastic shells on the elbow pads and shoulder pads. Reducing the protecting won’t cause any more injuries. These plastic shells aren’t doing anything that the old school pads didn’t, other than causing injuries. How much protection do you need for falling on your elbows?

I can’t see any downfalls with this slight change. It isn’t going to affect the players’ performance. Less padding would increase movement if anything. Most importantly, it isn’t changing how the game is played. We have the “old” and “new” NHL and regardless of which you prefer, most agree that they don’t want to see any more major changes.

Seems like a pretty simple solution.
Baby steps.

A lot of the newer elbow pads are reinforced at the elbow, but don't necessarily retain the external plastic padding. But with or without that padding, an elbow to the head alone can be enough to cause some serious damage. Besides, some of that plastic padding does serve a purpose when you consider that thick little biscuit heading toward ya or the stick that sent it crashing across your forearm during the follow-through.

I think it's possible for the game to retain its physicality, but we have to acknowledge that the medical research is out there now basically proving what we've suspected all along, that these head hits have extremely serious long-term implications.

In the end I think that the league can deal with hits to the head on a case-by-case nature, picking out the ones that are egregious and punishing them appropriately.

Correct, not all elbow and shoulder pads have them but a lot do. I'm not saying soften the padding so people can skate with head down, I'm stating that some injuries could be perverted if they were softer. Hits still would hurt, injuries still happen maybe just not as many.

I'm not saying that players should be able to skate with head down. You must have read the article wrong. I'm old school too. Old school had softer pads and we still saw big hits and injuries will occur. Get hurt by a big hit is great, but if its from the padding that is stupid.

i don't know . growing up playing the game. coaches beat into your head " keep your headup " with rule 48 , and being able to turn your back to a player along the boards so can't he play the body ?? i always thought as a player you were responsible for yourself. if player starts playing the game not concerned about being hit in " compromising " position. thats when he skates with his head down and is unaware of the approching player. maybe i'm just old school. but i thought it was my problem if i got knocked on my ass , not the other player.
