Re: The Pussification Of the NHL
by bails16 on Sunday, October 23, 2011 I've noticed one trend with most of these "dirty hits", the recieving players seem to turn their backs at the last second so that the other guy has no choice. The following is just my opinion sorry if you don't like it; Brendan Shanahan is a fucking joke. He played in the NHL when being tough was a job requirement and now he is catering to every pussy that can't take a hit like a man. The guy needs to remember where he came from. Start penalizing guys for putting themselves in that situation. My rant is over.

by hockeyrinkhero17 on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 definitely agree! this shit is only down hill from here... the suspensions are a joke and there are grinders out there that make a career out of this shit. What are they gonna do when they get suspended 20 games for a dirty play? or cant fight? hockey is a manly dirty sport, get the pussys of the nhl out of here.
by Cooney7 on Sunday, October 23, 2011 Agreed puck is meant to be a violent sport, without fighting it just turns into high school hockey. Everyone chirpin and not having to back themselves up and answer the bell
Re: The Pussification Of the NHL
by phase4 on Thursday, April 07, 2011 I think that in the long run we really just need to see a little more consistency across the board when dealing with quote-unquote dirty hits. It's puzzling to see a guy get 10 for what another gets away with scott-free. That's not to say that the NHL can't take a case-by-case approach, especially in circumstances where it's relatively clear that there wasn't an intent to take a guy out of the game. But we have to face the fact that a lot of these goon hits are meant to do just that. Removing the excessive goon hits doesn't necessarily put goons out of a job either. They can still land some solid and clean hits that will do more than enough to keep the agile scorers in line. But some of the blindside and head hits this season have been pretty brutal, and blatantly obvious. And the sort of stuff that could potentially end a guy's career, when done purposefully, needs to be dealt with immediately and effectively. Just because someone is hired to be a goon doesn't mean that they have carte blanche under the spirit of the game to go around trying to remove other skaters from the game. Repeat offenders should be dealt with severely.

by naturespocket on Thursday, March 24, 2011 Well, we wouldn't have to have these debates if jerks like Matt Cooke, whether you like him or not, you know he's an a-hole, that's just his hockey personna....but I digress; if players like Matt Cooke and those of the same ilk would quit with the slamming/hitting/blindsiding of players who have no idea there's an a-hole nearby, this wouldn't be talked about. Well, and if Crosby would follow the basic rule you learn when you put on a pair of skates: Head up, not down! Let's face it, if it didn't involve the precious Penguins and their large "North-North-American" fanbase, this wouldn't be an issue. I love the fights. When appropriate. But F-ing up someone's career is not cool. I heard one commentator mention instituting a rule where if a team's player hits someone with what is considered unsportsmanlike contact or of the like (basically, blinsiders, elbows to the head, checks resulting in necks becoming familiar with the CitiBank advertisement, etc, that player's team would have to play either the remainder of the game or the several games following the conclusion of the one with the infraction, short-handed. Hence, putting the team on a longer, more costly 4 on 5/shorthanded situation. His view being that if that were a rule, you wouldn't see to many, if any of those types of hits. There's been talk of a more expansive fine also, one not just given to the player at fault. Should that be instituted, personally, I think the GMs and/or both Coaches should have to face the fine. Let's face it, at least half the time the coach is the one telling his players, "take 'So and So' out of the game!" I guess what I mean is, at some point we all have to ask ourselves the most important question of all time: would Emilio stand for this!? Marinate on that. (And, for those of you who aren't sure what he'd do, well I'll tell ya, he'd: QUACK QUACK QUACK! I Wish Charlie Sheen would quit holding up production of D4 already! I'm forgetting the formation of The Flying Vee and I need Emilio's guidance)

by penaltyaddict on Thursday, March 24, 2011 i agree completely with what you said. ive been saying it myself for a long time now. look at what gillies pulls compares to what tough guys of the past used to. probert pulled hair, jumped guys, headbutted guys, you name it. everybody loved him. i loved him. yet gillies pulls a couple bad stunts and the league suspends him for 19 games and every fan and their dog is complaining about how classless and dirty he is and they want him hung from the highest tree. it wont be long until fighting is gone, and the suspensions now are a joke. people dont like players like gillies anymore because bettmann is doing everything he can to promote a family friendly sport. its turning into such a joke. i realize the skill level of the players has gotten much better, but its just not my type of hockey anymore. i grew up idolizing domi just as much as sundin |
