Training and Conditioning Druggies in Sport...I'll Never Understand
Posted by F.T.B on Wednesday, September 01, 2004
As the Olympics were coming to a close,I was reminded of how most sports are trying to clean up their image and as a result of that, how many athletes have been caught using drugs...

Now I am as much against them as the next person but I can understand the desire to improve performance. What I don't understand are the morons who would, given the choice, pick recreational drugs over sports.

Case in point:
Ricky Williams. He "retired" from the NFL because he wants to be able to smoke marijuana and not have to hide it, or so he says. So what's this have to do with hockey? Does anyone remember Jere Karalahti? For the uninformed, Karalahti is the Finnish defenceman who used to play for the Los Angeles Kings and the Nashville Predators. He is also a heroin addict. Upon his second positive test for alcohol and drugs, this genius announces that if he has to abide by these rules that he would rather play in Finland where he can drink and inject himself at his leisure. Karalahti walks away from the best hockey league in the world and a 1.5 million dollar contract for much less money but the freedom to get smashed and high whenever he wants. Quick show of hands, would any of you walk away from that?

Didn't think so. After all, this isn't Theo Fleury, who has a legitimate addiction and is getting help for it so he can get back on the ice and live a normal life, this is a guy who is putting his drug use as priority number one over his career. If anyone of us decided to do that,we would be fired from our jobs within seconds! I will never understand why someone would walk away from a lifelong dream in favour of the needle.

So basically,my words of wisdom comes down to this, If anyone is focusing more on the party favours after the game then the game itself, its about that time you give your head a violent shake and get your act together.

that was a great article.

Although I understand why leagues ban illegal substances, why should the ban something that isnt performance inhancing.

Case in point:
Ross rebagliaskdjaklswhatever-his-name-is. the canadian olympic snowboarded who almost had his medal revoked casue he had some THC in his piss. they DIDNT revoke for the simple fact the marijuana is not a performance inhancing drug.

there is one thing I dont agree with. FTB you said that Theo Fleury has a 'legitimate addiction' I dont think that ANY addiction is good nor should be legitimate. Unless you're a crack baby, then you have an excuse for you addiction.

Great article. So true. It's easy to get caught up in all the bullshit off the playing surface, but as soon as that begins to interfer with your ability to perform at the highest level, it's a problem. I can't believe someone would give up Football for drug use. Marijuanna isn't the worst thing going, but certainly quitting the NFL for it sends a strong message that maybe football wasn't his greatest passion anyways, and when I'm paying big money to see people put their all into sport, I wan them to be passionate enough in their sport to put it above getting high.

Yeah it's surprising to think that you would give up your career just so you could do drugs more often but I guess when you have money theres a point where you know you just have enough money to live comfortably for the rest of your life. I dunno I don't think I'd do it, but he's going out at the top of his game, if he never comes back he'll always be the great "what if" of football legends. Karhlati was never that good to start with so whatever haha.
