Druggies in Sport...I'll Never Understand
As the Olympics were coming to a close,I was reminded of how most sports are trying to clean up their image and as a result of that, how many athletes have been caught using drugs... Now I am as much against them as the next person but I can understand the desire to improve performance. What I don't understand are the morons who would, given the choice, pick recreational drugs over sports. Case in point: Ricky Williams. He "retired" from the NFL because he wants to be able to smoke marijuana and not have to hide it, or so he says. So what's this have to do with hockey? Does anyone remember Jere Karalahti? For the uninformed, Karalahti is the Finnish defenceman who used to play for the Los Angeles Kings and the Nashville Predators. He is also a heroin addict. Upon his second positive test for alcohol and drugs, this genius announces that if he has to abide by these rules that he would rather play in Finland where he can drink and inject himself at his leisure. Karalahti walks away from the best hockey league in the world and a 1.5 million dollar contract for much less money but the freedom to get smashed and high whenever he wants. Quick show of hands, would any of you walk away from that? Didn't think so. After all, this isn't Theo Fleury, who has a legitimate addiction and is getting help for it so he can get back on the ice and live a normal life, this is a guy who is putting his drug use as priority number one over his career. If anyone of us decided to do that,we would be fired from our jobs within seconds! I will never understand why someone would walk away from a lifelong dream in favour of the needle. So basically,my words of wisdom comes down to this, If anyone is focusing more on the party favours after the game then the game itself, its about that time you give your head a violent shake and get your act together. -FTB |
