A GSH Editorial
Something happened over the past few years when ESPN decided to run the World Series of Poker on TV across North America. Something happened to a nation that has always been fascinated with making a quick buck. Poker fever spread though homes of the rich and poor alike. It was no surprise that it made it into the hockey culture, passing the time on long bus rides across the prairies, and boring nights in the hotel before a big game. GSH dives into this culture, where pocket Aces can send a rush through your body like an overtime winner in the playoffs…. |

 | The long bus trips and swapping war stories, while playing cards, and sipping the odd beer. Those were some of the best times I endured as a hockey player. The game I loved playing as a child has changed some, but not as much as I have changed in the last couple years. |

 | Barry Melrose is going into the hall of fame. Not for hockey, 33 points in 300 games as a player or 79 wins as a coach are not enshrinable numbers, even for a place that honours Harold Ballard as a member. No, tonight during their game against the Portland Pirates, the Manchester Monarchs are inducting the Kelvington, Sask., native into the mullet hall of fame.Melrose, the former NHLer and coach of the Los Angeles Kings, derided by none other than Don Cherry during the 1993 playoffs as Billy Ray Cyprus (a reference to the egregiously mulleted country star Billy Ray Cyrus with the achy, breaky singing career), is accepting the honour in the spirit in which it was offered."It's going to be a blast," said Melrose, now an analyst for ESPN. "I grew up in the American Hockey League and I coached in the AHL, so I know what the AHL is all about. If I can get seven or eight thousand people in their building to have a good time, I'm all for it." | |

People on the outside world cannot understand what happens in a hockey dressing room. The word chemistry is often used to describe what lurks behind the walls of a tight knit hockey room. |

Written by: GSH Contributing Writer I hated that bumpy area of the ice in by the old apple tree. Struggling across that ice in my backyard, all I ever wanted to do was to play with bigger kids, but instead I'd be thrown in nets, mainly due to the timeless unproven out door rink crime of "Being the little guy", something that always seemed to be deemed righteous due to the fact that "well your the youngest, you have to". |
