I was eight years old. Five in the morning was not too early of a time for me to wake up, especially for a hockey practice. I finished putting on my shin pads and tightening my hockey pants and I remember knocking on my parent's bedroom door. "C'mon Dad, it's time to go."
We stopped at Tim Horton's on the way to the rink. As I finished eating my muffin, my Dad joined the other fathers for a pre-day coffee. I lugged the remainder of my equipment down the abandoned corridor to the dressing room, but on the way something caught my eye. I took a deep breath which filled my lungs with a winter frost. Turning my head, I gazed across the rink. A cool fog rolled over the ice, awaiting a warrior's blade to carve through it's untouched canvas. This was my childhood, my passion, my art, but most of all - it was my life. |

It might be fair to say that Hockey in the UK is a growth sport, a short while back it seemed like no-one knew hockey existed unless in the traditional form of ball and grass. But now times are changing and the opportunity to watch, play and be successful on UK soil is growing.

Recently, a Junior 'B' team in the NorPac lost two teammates to an alleged drunk-driving incident. I have written a few thoughts regarding it:
Nobody ever said being a hockey coach was easy, let alone coaching at the Junior ‘A’ or ‘B’ level. Years ago, a coach was merely a mentor that players looked up to, a role model for players new to the Junior Hockey realm, or possibly players in their first year away from home. However, as the mindsets of parents change with society, so does the inherent role of the coach. Instead of showing up merely at practice and game times, coaches must now take on the added role of being a parent to younger players, both with guidance and discipline.

Some plug this year bout ended my dream of makin it to the show. it was state crossovers in midget u16 teir 1, third shift of the game. came out strong was flyin across the ice and i got a twig across the face. some kid tommahawked me across the face, so im slidin across the ice and i feel this wierd pain in my leg. i look down and theres blood everywhere, so i get up and im like yelling at the ref and he just tells me to get off the ice so i got off and i was like coach im cut, im cut. haha he just told me to sit down and i showed him and his fuckin eyes looked like turkcy nuts. haha they got huge, so the trainer threw me on the ground and was sayin all this medical bull and i cant feel anything, hes throwin needles down on my leg like its fuckin showtime. they finally stop the game even though it dont matter, im allready on the bench and theyre all on one knee... and all you can hear is the dam trainer tellin me that i got an artery cut and its down to the bone, my first reaction to all this was "coach, am i gonna die" and he said maybe. so the fuckin tool who was takin care of me told me i was gonna die, the plugs up in the stands above my bench were laughing at me, my team was crying, my coach, one of them took off running, i felt like a fuckin tool shed ted. the kids were laughing till they seen my cut, all in all, it was 2 inches deep, 8 inches long, 87 stitches were headed my way, and the ambulance ride was sweet , no pain killers, country music blasting and she hit every bump on the way there. put me out for two months, no pain killers at all, my dad threw them away and said im not a pussy. which i found out i wasnt, but now im rollin and hopefully playin junior a hockey. |

I may not be your average Gongshow Hockey member, but I have shared many of the same memories and experiences through hockey that most of you have. I am a female hockey player from Minnesota and have played at every level possible. As I graduated from college and am currently playing in a women’s professional league I’ve looked back at my life of hockey..the good and the bad. I think we all know hockey is the greatest sport on earth that can only be truly appreciated by those that have played it. I recently saw a quote by Sidney Crosby which sums it up best, “What do you call a life that’s been nothing but hockey? I call it time well spent.†However, we all know as well that in our hockey careers we have all ran across bumps in the road.
